Why Your Candle Is Tunneling (And How to Fix It)
There is nothing quite like lighting your favorite candle, settling into your evening, and letting the fragrance fill your space. But have you ever noticed your candle burning straight down the center, leaving a thick ring of untouched wax around the edges?
That is called candle tunneling, and it is one of the most common frustrations candle lovers experience.
The good news is that in many cases it is preventable. And if you catch it early enough, you may even be able to fix it.
Here is everything you need to know about why candles tunnel, how to prevent it, and how to get the most out of every burn.
What is candle tunneling?
Candle tunneling happens when a candle burns down the center without melting enough of the surrounding wax. Instead of creating an even pool of melted wax across the surface, the flame gradually forms a narrow tunnel.
Over time this can leave a significant amount of unused wax along the sides of the container. Not only does tunneling affect how your candle looks, but it can also shorten its usable life and make it harder for the wick to burn properly.
And when you have invested in a beautiful candle, the last thing you want is to leave all that fragrance and wax behind.
Why do candles tunnel?
There are a few reasons a candle might tunnel, and understanding them is the first step toward preventing it.
Not letting your candle burn long enough. This is the most common cause. When a candle is repeatedly extinguished before the melted wax has time to spread toward the edges of the container, it can begin burning down the same narrow path. This is often called candle memory, and it is especially important to pay attention to during the first burn.
For Luminosa Vida candles, we generally recommend allowing approximately 3–4 hours for the first burn, giving the melted wax time to reach or nearly reach the edges of the vessel. Always follow the candle's safety instructions and never exceed its maximum recommended burn time.
A wick that is too small. Sometimes tunneling is not a care issue at all. If the wick is not producing enough heat to melt the wax evenly across the container, tunneling can happen regardless of how long you burn it. This is why proper wick testing matters so much in candle making. At Luminosa Vida, each formulation is carefully tested to evaluate how the wax, fragrance, wick, and vessel work together before anything goes into production.
Drafts and uneven airflow. Where you place your candle matters more than you might think. Ceiling fans, open windows, and air conditioning vents can all cause the flame to flicker and burn unevenly. A stable surface away from airflow gives your candle the best chance at an even burn.
How to fix a tunneling candle
If you have noticed your candle starting to tunnel, do not give up on it just yet.
Give it a proper burn. If the tunneling is still minor, your candle may simply need more time to develop an even melt pool. On your next burn, allow it to stay lit for its recommended duration. A shallow tunnel can sometimes correct itself gradually as the surrounding wax catches up.
Check your wick. Before relighting, make sure the wick is trimmed to approximately one quarter inch. A wick that is too long can create excessive flame height, smoking, and soot. One that is cut too short may struggle to stay lit or generate enough heat to melt the wax evenly. Consistent wick maintenance is one of the simplest things you can do for a better burn every time.
Know when to stop. You may have seen the aluminum foil trick circulating online. While well intentioned, placing foil around a burning candle can trap heat and create unsafe temperatures around the vessel. We do not recommend modifying the container or trying to force the wax to melt. If the tunnel has become severe, the wick is buried, or the candle no longer burns properly, it is safer to discontinue use than to risk overheating the glass.
How to prevent tunneling from the start
A little candle care goes a long way. These simple habits help your candles burn more evenly and last longer.
- Be patient with the first burn. Allow approximately 3–4 hours for your Luminosa Vida candle to develop a broad, even melt pool, without exceeding the recommended maximum burn time.
- Trim your wick to approximately one quarter inch before each burn.
- Avoid short burn sessions. Repeatedly lighting your candle for just a few minutes can contribute to tunneling.
- Keep candles away from drafts, fans, and vents.
- Follow the recommended burn time and never exceed the manufacturer's maximum duration.
- Stop burning when approximately half an inch of wax remains at the bottom of the vessel, or sooner if directed by the manufacturer.
Does coconut wax tunnel?
Coconut wax is loved for its smooth appearance, creamy texture, and excellent scent throw when properly formulated. But no candle wax is completely immune to tunneling. Whether a candle is made with coconut, soy, paraffin, or a blend, performance depends on the wick, the vessel, the fragrance formulation, and the burning conditions.
At Luminosa Vida, our candles are handcrafted in small batches using vegan coconut wax, cotton wicks, and phthalate-free fragrance oils. We believe a beautiful candle should offer more than a lovely scent. It should be thoughtfully made and enjoyed with a little intention.
Candle care does not have to be complicated. A few intentional habits can make a meaningful difference in how your candle performs, helping you enjoy more of the fragrance, atmosphere, and experience you purchased it for.
